"BIGGEST STEP TOWARD POLITICAL MORALITY"

RNC RESTRICTS NUMBER OF SOUTHERN DELEGATES

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On June 8, 1921, the Republican National Committee* placed "drastic restrictions on the number of delegates from Southern states."

Carter Field of the New York Tribune describes this as...

"perhaps the biggest step toward political morality in the selection of Republican candidates for President ever taken."

The RNC also awarded states which went for Warren G. Harding (R) in the 1920 presidential election two additional delegates.  Maryland, Tennessee and Oklahoma were so rewarded while Kentucky, which was carried by James M. Cox (D), was "punished."

Additionally, the rules were amended to allow for one committee woman from each state or territory.

*Republican National Committee, founded in 1856 & headquartered in the Nation's Capital, is responsible for developing & promoting the Republican political platform & coordinating fundraising, election strategy & "party brand."
