"EXAMPLE OF GREAT PEOPLES LIVING SIDE BY SIDE"

PRESIDENT SPEAKS OF WORLD PEACE AT AMERICAN UNIVERSITY

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On June 8, 1921, President Warren G. Harding delivered a commencement address at American University here in the Nation's Capital in which he diverted from his prepared remarks to speak of world peace.

The President's remarks followed those of Newton W. Rowell*, K.C. of Toronto, Ontario, who said that men in North America should "stand behind the movement for peaceful settlement of international disputes."

President Harding said...

"I liked (Mr. Rowell's) expression that American and Canadian ideals are in common...the example of two great peoples living side by side in peace...is about the finest contribution that two nations could give to the world."

*Newton Wesley Rowell (1867-1941) was born in Middlesex Centre, Canada.  NWR was a lawyer, politician, judge & lay leader in the Methodist Church.  He had a successful litigation practice in Toronto & was head of the Ontario Liberal Party 1911-1917.
