PRESIDENT HARDING REQUESTS $200,000 APPROPRIATION
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On August 15, 1921, President Warren G. Harding asked Congress for a $200,000 appropriation requested by the State Department "for defraying the expenses of the disarmament conference."
A letter bearing the request was sent through Undersecretary of State Henry P. Fletcher* to Director Charles G. Dawes** of the Bureau of the Budget "showing the need" for the appropriation.
The President's approval was sent to the United States Senate with an official copy of the invitation to the conference to participating nations.
*Henry Prather Fletcher (1873-1959) was born in Greencastle, PA & served in TR's Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War. HPF was US Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg & Italy. He served under 6 U.S. Presidents.
**Charles Gates Dawes (1865-1951) was born in Marietta, Ohio & attended Cincinnati Law School. CGD served as US Ambassador to U.K. 1929-31 & VPOTUS 1925-1929.
