"MAHATMA CAN STOP BULLETS & HEAL DISEASE"

GANDHI'S FOLLOWERS SEE HIM AS 'MIRACLE WORKER'

London (JFK+50) On December 29, 1921, the Bombay correspondent of the Westminster Gazette informed readers that "the popular belief in India that Mahandas Gandhi*...possesses supernatural powers is growing."

Villagers who believe that the nationalist leader can "stop bullets, heal disease, (and) replace severed limbs" have dubbed him "Mahatma," or "wonder worker."

Gandhi has "assured his followers" he his no "miracle man."

*Monhandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948) was born in Porbandar, India & became an anti-colonial nationalist leader using non-violent resistance to win India's independence from British rule.
