AUSSIES PLAN FOR DIRECT WIRELESS COMMUNICATION TO BRITAIN
Melbourne, Australia (JFK+50) On December 13, 1921, the Australian Federal Parliament "appointed a committee with authority to investigate and approve a plan for the establishment of direct wireless communication between Great Britain and Australia."
The action, according to the New York Tribune, was "stimulated by the facility with which Australia stations received President (Warren G.) Harding's 'round-the-world' wireless message*. The broadcast last week was received by press associations "without relay messages sent from Carnarvon, Wales."
*"President Harding will address practically the entire civilized globe in the message to be broadcast by radio on November 5 from the newest & largest station at Port Jefferson." New York Times
JFK+50 Note
Radio broadcasts began in Great Britain by the British Broadcasting Company in 1922. The first radio broadcast in Australia occurred in Sydney on Nov 23, 1923.
