"BONAPARTE RESTED ON IT DURING BATTLE OF JENA"

NAPOLEON'S HISTORIC SOFA TAKEN FROM GERMAN HOTEL

Jena, Germany (JFK+50) On January 15, 1922 the Associated Press reported that the previous night four men dressed as French officers entered "The Sign of the Nightingale" demanding that the proprietor "surrender...the historic sofa upon which Napoleon*...rested during the Battle of Jena**."

 The AP says that the men were allowed to take the sofa which they took out to an automobile and drove away.

*Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) was born in Ajaccio, France & rose to prominence in the French Revolution.  NB served as leader of the French Republic and First Consul, 1799-1804.

**Battle of Jena, October 14 1806, was fought between the French forces of Napoleon and the Prussian forces of Frederick William III.  Napoleon's victory resulted in the subjugation of the Kingdom of Prussia to the French Empire.
