"DENBY HUNTING IN VIRGINIA WITHOUT A LICENSE?"

MR. DENBY SAYS HE HOLDS VIRGINIA HUNTING LICENSE

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On January 10, 1922, Secretary Edwin C. Denby* announced he "has no immediate fear" that he will be "haled before the Virginia State game commission" to answer charges that he hunted in the commonwealth without a license.

Mr. Denby's response follows Secretary M.D. Hart of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries calling to his attention a clipping sent anonymously asking if "these birds of republican plumage are not expected...to pay (for) a hunting license?"

Secretary Denby claims "that license No. 3011" is "held by the present naval head," and that he is convinced that he will not be excluded from hunting in "the rich game reserves of Virginia."

*Edwin C. Denby (1870-1929) was born in Evansville, Indiana & educated at the University of Michigan.  ECD served in the US House of Representatives 1905-1911 & practiced law in Detroit after being defeated for re-election.

He served in the USMC during WWI & as Secretary of the Navy under Harding & Coolidge.  ECD was implicated in the Teapot Dome scandal & forced to resign.
