HARDING ASKS FOR HELP TO PUT UNEMPLOYED TO WORK
Washington,D.C. (JFK+50) On January 27, 1922, President Warren G. Harding requested the assistance of the Departments of War, Navy, Agriculture, Treasury, Interior and Commerce "in providing work for the unemployed."
The President suggested repair and construction projects could be undertaken immediately.
President Harding is quoted in the Evening Star as saying...
"The response of the general public to appeals for the widest possible employment has been so generous and effective that I think we should be more concerned to have the agencies of the federal government do their very utmost share in this humane effort."
