SUFFRAGE AMENDMENT UPHELD UNANIMOUSLY BY SUPREME COURT
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On February 27, 1922, the United States Supreme Court unanimously upheld the constitutionality of the 19th amendment. The decision was announced by Justice Louis Brandeis*.
The state of Maryland had challenged the validity of the Suffrage amendment on the grounds that the State constitution limited the right to vote to men.
The New York Tribune reports "the decision today so thoroughly disposed of the objections (that there is) no probability that any argument could be presented which would cause the court to change its views."

"women are now free to devote their energies to completing the equal rights program."
*Louis Dembitz Brandeis (1856-1941) was born in Louisville, Kentucky & earned his L.L.B. at Harvard University. LDB served on the USSC 1916-1939 & is considered by legal scholars as making the "greatest defenses of freedom of speech & the right to privacy."
**Alice Stokes Paul (1885-1977) was born in Mt. Laurel Township, NJ & educated at Swarthmore College. An outspoken suffragist & feminist, ASP was arrested 7 times in seeking equality for women.
