CEREMONY TO MARK BEGINNING OF CONSTRUCTION ON MEADE MEMORIAL TO BE HELD IN BOTANIC GARDENS
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On March 25, 1922, the Evening Star reports "a simple but impressive ceremony" will be held in the Botanic Gardens Tuesday afternoon "to celebrate the commencement of the actual construction work of the Meade memorial*."
Speaking guests at the event will be Secretary of War John W. Weeks** and Pennsylvania Governor William C. Sproul***. Civil War veterans organizations plan to send representatives.
Active construction work by Simon & Simon of Philadelphia will begin at the end of the ceremony.
*Meade Memorial is located at 300 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. It honors General George Gordon Meade who commanded Union troops at the Battle of Gettysburg. The MM was sculpted by Charles Grafly & dedicated in 1927 by President Coolidge.
**John Wingate Weeks (1860-1926) was born in Lancaster, N.H. & served in U.S. Congress 1905-1913, U.S. Senate 1913-1919, & as Secretary of War 1921-1925.
***William Cameron Sproul (1870-1928) was born in Colerain Township, PA & served as Pennsylvania governor 1919-1923.
