"WOMEN CONTROL POLITICS, PROPERTY & CHILDREN"

AT BALAKS, MEN LIKE WOMEN RUNNING THE GOVERNMENT

New York City (JFK+50) On March 26, 1922, the Evening Star reports that "at Balaks, in Sumatra*, governmental affairs are entirely in the hands of women."

The Associated Press story cites the source of information coming from Gertrude Emerson, a magazine writer returning from 22 months of travel in the orient.

Ms. Emerson says "men like the situation with women not only controlling politics and property, but also the children."

*Sumatra is a large Indonesian island west of Java & south of the Malay Peninsula known for its rugged tropical terrain, wildlife & smoldering volcanoes.
