REV. HAMILTON SAYS MODERNIST MINISTERS ARE 'SPREADERS OF INFAMOUS DOCTRINES'
Rochester, Michigan (JFK+50) On Halloween day 1922, the Rev. Harold J. Hamilton, speaking at First Baptist Church here in Rochester, proclaimed that "churches have become hotbeds of infidelity."
The clergyman placed the blame upon "modernist" ministers such as Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick* of New York City and Dr. Charles Foster Kent** of Yale University. Rev. Hamilton described these men as "spreaders of 'infamous doctrines'.
*Harry Emerson Fosdick (1878-1969) was born in Buffalo, NY & graduated Colgate University, 1900 & Union Theological Seminary, 1904. HEF became one of the most prominent liberal ministers of his time. He pastored at Riverside Church in Manhattan.
**Charles Foster Kent (1867-1925) was born in Palmyra, NY & educated at Yale & University of Berlin. CFK became an Old Testament scholar who was founder of the American Academy of Religion.
