POST OFFICE DELIVERS WHITE HOUSE VOTES TO WRONG TOWN
Marietta, Ohio (JFK+50) On October 30, 1922, the local election board here in Marietta received a letter from the White House which caused "a flutter of excitement."
The Evening Star reports the excitement "did not last long" because when the letter was opened it was found to contain the votes of President Warren G. Harding, the First Lady and Secretary George B. Christian, Jr.*.
The letter had been mistakenly delivered to Marietta instead of Marion, Ohio. Officials quickly resealed the letter and "hurried it off to the post office for its proper destination."
*George B. Christian, Jr. graduated from Pennsylvania Military College, 1896. He was next door neighbor of the Hardings in Marion, Ohio & became Mr. Harding's personal secretary in 1913. GBC was the President's political advisor & closest confidant.
