AMERICAN CONSUL IN MALTA RECEIVES TREATMENT FOR GUNSHOT WOUND
Valetta, Malta (JFK+50) On December 12, 1922, Mason Mitchell*, American consul in Malta, "was shot near Baracca." The Associated Press reports the consul was wounded and "taken to a physician for treatment."
The reports are that the shooter is a "madman." Mr. Mitchell, who is expected to recover in one or two days, said...
"I know nobody who could have done this."
The New York Times reported the following day that two men were arrested in connection with the shooting of Mason Mitchell, one of these men had been dishonorably discharged from the American army in the war.
*Mason Mitchell (1859-1930) was born in Hamilton, New York & went on stage at the age of 18. MM was manager of the Garnick Theater in NY. He served in the Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War & was wounded at the Battle of Santiago.
