HOOVER SAYS HARDING WILL BE REPUBLICAN NOMINEE FOR POTUS IN 1924
Palo Alto*, California (JFK+50) On December 1, 1922, Secretary of Commerce Herbert C. Hoover predicts that Warren G. Harding will "obviously" be the Republican presidential nominee in 1924.
In an interview at his home** here in California, Mr. Hoover said...
"By that time, the public will be highly appreciative of the sanity and progressive character of the policies that have brought this country through the reconstruction period."
JFK+50 NOTE
President Harding died on August 2, 1923, ironically in San Francisco, & Vice President Calvin Coolidge completed his term. Coolidge was opposed by Bob La Follette of Wisconsin & Hiram Johnson of California at the Republican convention in June 1924, but won the nomination handily. You might say while Coolidge did "not choose to run" in 1928, he did so in 1924 without talking about it.
As to Mr. Hoover's characterization of Harding's policies as "progressive," Professor Trani of Virginia Commonwealth University writes, "On most issues related to the economy & foreign trade, Harding was decidedly conservative." He adds, however, that Harding "did accept some government reforms."
*Palo Alto is a city in the San Francisco Bay area of California. It is located in Santa Clara County & in the Silicon Valley. PA is also the home of Stanford University. The city was incorporated in 1894.
The Evening Star (Associated Press) printed the city's name as "Palo Alta," an obvious typo.
**Lou Henry Hoover House, 623 Miranda Avenue is located on the campus of Stanford University. Of mission revival architecture & designed by Mrs. Hoover, it was completed in 1920.
Today the LHHH is on the Register of Historic Places and is the official home of the president of Stanford University.
