RAILROAD MAGNATE DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS
Mentone, France (JFK+50) On May 16, 1923, multi-millionaire George Jay Gould, Sr.* passed away at his villa near Mentone "after a long illness."
The railroad magnate had been suffering from a heart condition and a "throat affliction." He became ill while traveling in Egypt and was taken to the French Riviera to recover.
Mr. Gould's estate is valued at $50,000,000.
*George Jay Gould, Sr. (1864-1923) was the son of railroad developer Jay Gould. GJG became a financier & railroad executive. He headed the Denver & Rio Grande Western RR, the Western Pacific RR & the Manhattan Railway Company.
