BISHOP-ELECT MAKES 1ST PUBLIC STATEMENT ON PLANS FOR THE WASHINGTON CATHEDRAL
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On June 10, 1923, Rev. James E. Freeman, bishop-elect of Washington, made his first public statement "concerning the plans of the Episcopal Church" to complete the National Cathedral.*
The Rev. states...
"This cathedral...makes an unusual and unique appeal because it is national in character. It must stand as the witness of our common faith as a people. It is to be a house of prayer for all..."
The statement continues...
"On its artistic side, it will be the greatest building of its kind in America."
*The National Cathedral is located at Wisconsin Avenue & Massachusetts Avenue NW in Washington, D.C. Construction was begun in 1907 & TR laid the cornerstone in 1912. Funeral services of 4 POTUS have taken place at TNC, Eisenhower, Reagan, Ford & GHW Bush.
