"SOLDIERS' BONUS OVERSHADOWS BOTH"

PRESIDENT'S MAJOR OBJECTIVES LIKELY TO BE ECONOMY IN GOVERNMENT SPENDING & TAX REDUCTION

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On August 28, 1923, The Evening Star reports that there is enough evidence to show that President Calvin Coolidge "wants to make a record of economy in government expenditures."

David Lawrence writes that this is to be the President's "first major objective."

Chairman Martin B. Madden* of the House Committee on Appropriations, in consultation with Secretary of the Treasury Andrew Mellon, indicates Mr. Coolidge's second major objective will be tax reduction.

Mr. Lawrence writes that the issue that "overshadows" both of these objectives is the soldiers' bonus.

*Martin Barnaby Madden (1855-1928) was born in England & served in the US House of Representatives (R-Illinois) 1905-1928.
