"HE HAD IT ALL-MONEY, EDUCATION & LOOKS"

PAUL J. RAINEY, EXPLORER & BIG GAME HUNTER, DIES AT 46

New York City (JFK+50) On September 19, 1923, it was learned via radio messaging that Paul J. Rainey*, well-known explorer and big game hunter, passed away aboard ship en route from Southampton to Capetown.

The cause of death is reported by the Associated Press as "a stroke of paralysis."  AP says that Mr. Rainey will be remembered best "as the big game hunter of the tropics."

JFK+50 NOTE

Paul J. Rainey's cause of death was later changed to cerebral hemorrhage although there were rumors that it was due to argument gone bad.  William J. Morrissey writes..."He had it all--money, education and looks...along with an obsession for danger."

*Paul James Rainey (1877-1923) was born in Cleveland, Ohio & earned a reputation as a playboy before driving an ambulance in WWI & hunting big game in Africa afterwards.  PJR made a profitable silent film on the hunt.
