"LONGEVITY DOES NOT THRIVE ON INERTIA"

FORMER US SENATOR WHO HEARD LINCOLN'S GETTYSBURG ADDRESS 101 YEARS OLD TODAY

Los Angeles, California (JFK+50) On September 17, 1923, former United States Senator Cornelius Cole* celebrated his 101st birthday with a "quiet reception" at his home here in the City of Angels.

Mr. Cole, according to the Associated Press, is "one of the few living men who heard Abraham Lincoln deliver his Gettysburg address" on November 19, 1863.

The former California senator said...

"Longevity does not thrive on inertia.  One must keep moving.  I eat what I want...there are no 'don'ts' in my regime."

*Cornelius Cole (1822-1924) was born in Lodi, New York & graduated Wesleyan University 1847.  CC practiced law in San Francisco & Sacramento & was one of the organizers of the California Republican Party in the 1850s.  He served in the US House of Representatives 1863-1865 & US Senate 1867-1873.

JFK+50 NOTE

Mr. Cole admitted that he had given up tobacco six years earlier & drank alcoholic beverages "temperately" his entire life.
