MILLION VOLTS OF ELECTRICITY SENT OVER 42 FOOT ARC

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (JFK+50) On October 14, 1923, the Evening Star reports one million volts of electricity has been developed on  42 foot long arc in an experiment conducted this week at the Westinghouse high-voltage laboratory by the Pittsburgh section of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers*.

A 22,000 current was run through an experimental transformer and the arc came from a thin wire run from the transformer to a tank set in the floor.

*AIEE (1884-1962) was founded by Thomas Edison & Nikola Tesla among others.  On Jan 1 1963,  AIEE merged with the Institute of Radio Engineers to form the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers.
