BEJEWELLED WOMAN FIGHTS OFF ATTACKERS IN APARTMENT HOUSE LOBBY
New York City (JFK+50) On December 28, 1923, armed bandits attacked a "bejewelled young woman in evening dress" in the lobby of her apartment building on the West Side of New York City.
Refusing to be a victim, Mrs. Essie Simmons, "began fighting" two of five bandits leaving them with black eyes and scratched faces. After ten of the worst minutes of their lives, the bandits fled the scene. Mrs. Simmons was left with her dignity and jewels unscathed.
Her husband, by the way, had dropped her off at the door and was parking the car during the entire affair. So much for the stronger sex.
