"HIS NAME TO BE ON CALIFORNIA PRIMARY BALLOT"

MR. COOLIDGE DEFINITELY IN 1924 PRESIDENTIAL RACE

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On December 10, 1923, The Evening Star reports President (Calvin) Coolidge "has definitely entered the race for the (1924) republican presidential nomination" and "some of his friends are preparing to put his name on the primary ballot in California."

The Star's reporting is based on "a call (made) at the White House by William H. Crocker*, republican national committeeman from California.  Mr. Crocker is opposed to the candidacy of fellow Californian, Senator Hiram Johnson**.

*William Henry Crocker (1861-1937) was born in Sacramento, California & educated at Yale University.  He was the son of Charles Crocker, builder of the Central Pacific Railroad & one of the 'Big Four' of the U.S. railroad industry.  WHC became president of the Crocker National Bank.

**Hiram Warren Johnson (1866-1945) was born in Sacramento, California & educated at the University of California Berkely & Herald College.  HWJ served as governor of CA 1911-1917 & in the U.S. Senate (R-CA) 1917-1945.
