"MANY INCARCERATED FOR WARTIME OFFENSES"

EX-CONS WHO ARE MEMBERS OF THE NEW PARLIAMENT TO BE HONORED AT DINNER

London (JFK+50) On January 8, 1924, the Associated Press reports "an odd celebration will take place in one of the dining rooms of the house of commons tomorrow night."  Members of the new Parliament who have served prison terms will be "honored."

Of nineteen ex-cons, sixteen will attend with others who while not members of Parliament have "done time."

The largest percentage of the honorees "were incarcerated for wartime offenses" including Bertrand Russell* and Arnold Lupton**.  Women who were detained in the "votes for women" movement will attend including Lady Rhondda*** and Ms. Pethick Lawrence.

*Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) was born in Trelleck, UK & educated at Trinity College, 1893.  BR was the founder of analytic philosophy, & a pacifist who championed anti-imperialism.   He won the Nobel Prize in Literature.

**Arnold Lupton (1846-1930) was a British Liberal Party Member of Parliament & mining engineer.  AL was jailed for pacifist activities during WWI. 

***Lady Rhondda, a.k.a. Margaret Haig Thomas (1883-1958) was a British businesswoman & suffragette.
