THIEVES GAS CHICKENS BEFORE SWEEPING POULTRY HOUSES
Guilford, Connecticut (JFK+50) On January 29, 1924, The Associated Press reports that "the latest thing...in chicken thievery" is to use gas "to put the birds into a state of unconsciousness before making a sweep of the poultry houses."
This devious practice of 'twilight sleep' was asserted to the AP by the Poultry Thief Prevention Committee here in Guilford*.
JFK+50 COMMENT
From the tone of this article, chickens must surely be dangerous to approach when they are conscious and realize that someone is trying to steal them.
*Guilford is located in New Haven County near the Connecticut seacoast. The town has 5 historic house museums including the oldest dwelling home in the state.
