"A FENCE ALONG THE BORDER IS RECOMMENDED"

VICE AT THE U.S.-MEXICAN BORDER INCLUDES OPIUM DENS, NARCOTIC & GAMBLING HOUSES

Los Angeles, California (JFK+50) On February 16, 1924, Associated Press reports "a fence along the American-Mexican border extending five miles each side of Caleico (and) a similar barrier at Tia Juana" was recommended yesterday by Lucien Wheeler of the Department of Justice bureau of investigation.

Recommendations include "night and day riders to guard...and an embargo on all traffic from the United States to Mexico at these points between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m." daily.

In a report submitted by Mr. Wheeler, the town of Mexicali* is "wide-open" sporting opium dens, narcotic supply houses, two gambling houses with 200 girls on site.

*Mexicali, founded in 1903, known as "the city that captured the Sun," is a regional economic & cultural hub for the border region of the Californias.
