"DEPT OF COLLECTION OPEN TIL MIDNIGHT"

BEST TO FILE YOUR TAX RETURN BY MIDNIGHT

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) The Evening Star of March 15, 1924 says "File your income tax return by midnight or face the penalty*."  According to the Star, the department of collection, located at 1422 Pennsylvania Avenue NW "will remain open until midnight."

Taxpayers could also mail in their returns as long as it was postmarked by midnight, March 15th.  Another option was to bring their returns to one of two District of Columbia banks which were remaining open until late in the afternoon.

*The simple failure to file an income tax return in 1924 resulted in a fine of $1000 plus 25% of the tax due.  "Wilful" refusal to file resulted in a fine of up to $10,000 plus 25% of the tax due.

The Willard Hotel was located at 1401 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW., The department of collection at 1422 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW., would have been close by.
