"HAS BEEN IN A STORM CENTER IN SENATE INVESTIGATIONS"

BURNS RESIGNS AS BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION DIRECTOR

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On May 9, 1924, The Evening Star reports the resignation of William J. Burns* as director of the Justice Department's Bureau of Investigation.

Mr. Burns, who was appointed three years earlier by Attorney General Harry Daugherty, has "been in a storm center in several Senate investigations."

There have been rumors circulating in the Nation's Capital concerning Burns' resignation ever since Attorney General Daugherty resigned.

Current Attorney General Harlan F. Stone accepted the resignation "effective immediately."

JFK+50 NOTE

The Bureau of Investigation was established in 1908.  The agency became The Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1935.  Today the FBI employs 35,000 persons & has a budget around $10 billion.

*William John Burns (1861-1932) was born in Baltimore, Maryland & became known as America's Sherlock Holmes.  WJB served as director of the Bureau of Investigation (later known as the FBI) 1921-1924.
