WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN CONDEMNS G.O.P. TARIFF
New York City (JFK+50) On June 12, 1924, The Evening Star published a front-page article by William Jennings Bryan* condemning the Republican Party's high protective tariff.
Mr. Bryan writes "the historic attitude of the Democratic Party is against a protective tariff" and that "the present tariff law is the sum of abominations; it lays a burden at four billion a year upon the consumers of the United States, four-fifths of which goes into the pockets of protected interests."
*William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925) was born in Salem, Illinois & served in the U.S. House of Representatives (D-Nebraska) 1891-1895, & as U.S. Secretary of State 1913-1915. WJB was Democratic nominee for POTUS three times. He was known for champion causes of the ordinary man & thus was called "The Great Commoner."
