BUTLER'S ENDORSEMENT OF SPEAKER GILLETT IN MASSACHUSETTS SENATE PRIMARY CAUSES CONSTERNATION AMONG G.O.P. LEADERS
New York City (JFK+50) On September 8, 1924, The Evening Star reports "consternation...among Republican leaders" of William M. Butler's* endorsement of House speaker Frederick H. Gillett** for the Republican nomination for the United States Senate in the upcoming Massachusetts primary.
It is feared by some in the G.O.P. that Butler's action "will drive fair-minded Republicans from the party."
*William Morgan Butler (1861-1937) was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts & earned his LLB at Boston University. WMB served as U.S. Senator (R-MA) 1924-1926 & was RNC chairman 1924-1928.
**Frederick Huntington Gillett (1851-1935) was born in Westfield, MA & educated at Amherst College & Harvard Law School. FHG served as U.S. Speaker of the House 1921-1925 & U.S. Senator (R-MA) 1925-1931.
