WOMAN CHARGES BUREAU SUPPLYING 'SHODDY' FLAGS FOR WORLD WAR VETS COFFINS
New York City (JFK+50) On October 18, 1924, the Associated Press reports that the United States Veterans Bureau* has been attacked for "shoddy** flags" it is supplying for the coffins of veterans of the World War.
The AP says that Mrs. Lillian R. Sire "produced a flag" at a recent meeting of the New York State Federation of Women's Clubs" which she maintained was made "of inferior material."
Adding insult to injury, the flag did not include a row of eight stars.
Mrs. Sire stated that this flag was one of 300,000 "contracted for by the Veterans Bureau."
*The United States Department of Veteran's Affairs, a.k.a. Veterans Bureau, was established by the Sweet Act of 1921. The bureau's first director, appointed by President Harding, was Charles Forbes.
