ONLY A COOLIDGE LANDSLIDE CAN DEFEAT AL SMITH'S CHANCES FOR RE-ELECTION
New York City (JFK+50) On October 30, 1924, The Evening Star reports the "only G.O.P. chance...for defeating Al Smith* for the governorship of New York State is a "Coolidge landslide...carrying Col. Roosevelt along."
According to N.O. Messenger, "the Democratic managers feel confident that Governor Smith will increase the 400,000 plurality in greater New York of two years ago which helped sweep him into the governorship."

Al Smith (D) defeated Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. (R) 1,627,111 to 1,518,552 in the 1924 New York State governors race.
*Alfred Emanuel Smith (1873-1944) was born in New York City & served 4 terms as governor of New York State. AES was the 1928 Democratic nominee for POTUS & the 1st Roman Catholic candidate for POTUS. He was defeated in a landslide by Herbert Hoover in 1928. JFK was the first Catholic to be elected to the presidency.
