"PEOPLE WILL BE ABLE TO VOTE WITHOUT INTIMIDATION"

MARTIAL LAW PROCLAIMED IN SAN MIGUEL COUNTY, NEW MEXICO

Las Vegas, New Mexico* (JFK+50) On November 4, 1924, the Associated Press reports that "martial law was proclaimed in San Miguel County...last night by Governor J. F. Hinkle**."

The Governor said...

"There is going to be an honest election in San Miguel County, even if troops are necessary to supervise the polls."

Gov. Hinkle insisted that people will be able to vote "without intimidation."

State guardsmen will be assigned "police duty" in each precinct in the county.

The situation was brought about because district judge D. J. Leahy was suspended by Sheriff Lorenzo Delgado.

*Las Vegas, the county seat of San Miguel County, New Mexico.  is located 65 miles east of Santa Fe & established in 1835,   In 1846, it was in LV where Stephen Kearny claimed New Mexico for the United States.   

**James Fielding Hinkle (1864-1951) was born in Franklin County, Missouri & educated at the University of Missouri.  JFH moved to New Mexico in 1885 & served as governor 1923-1925.
