WASHINGTON STATE PUPILS CARRY RIFLES FOR PROTECTION AGAINST WILD ANIMALS
Wenatchee, Washington* (JFK+50) On January 30, 1925, Associated Press reports "even younger pupils of schools in the mountain districts (of the state of Washington)...are carrying rifles."
The reason? Wild animals from the high mountains have been driven to lower altitudes by a severe winter and consequently have "become a menace."
AP says that recently a young man was killed by a cougar and there was also an attack by a lynx and still another had "an encounter" with a rabid coyote.
*Wenatchee is the county seat & most populous city of Chelan County, Washington. It is known as the "Apple Capital of the World." The city was named after the Wenatchi native-American tribe.
