"BELIEVED TO ESTABLISH A NEW RECORD FOR STATE"

RECORD LOW TEMP IN MAINE REPORTED BELOW -50 DEGREES F.

Fort Fairfield, Maine (JFK+50) On January 19, 1925, "a temperature of 56 degrees below zero (F) was recorded at 7 o'clock this morning" here in Maine.

The Associated Press reports that this may establish a new low temperature record for the state.

JFK+50 NOTE

WGME claims that the coldest low temperature ever recorded in Maine (-50 degrees F) occurred on January 16, 2009.  That claim is supported by other sources including The Bangor Daily News.  The location given is at the Big Block River 2o miles south of Allagash^ near the border with Quebec.

Tomorrow's second inauguration of President Donald J. Trump will be held in the Capitol Rotunda because the temperatures will be dangerously cold.  The predicted low temperature in Washington, D.C. is 11 degrees F. with the high reaching only 24.

My son-in-law's parents live in Yarmouth where the temperature Tuesday & Wednesday night will be 3 degrees F.  Our first and only visit to Maine was to visit with them for July 4th in 2023.  We had a celebration with relatives who live on the coast at Kennebunkport.  The high temperature that day was in the low 70s which was refreshing because back at home in Tennessee it was in the 90s.

^Allagash is located in Aroostook County in the North Maine Woods region.  In 2023, its population was 236.
