SLEMP TO RETIRE AS PRESIDENTIAL SECRETARY; SANDERS TO FILL POST MARCH 4
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On January 15, 1925, The Evening Star reports that "C. Bascom Slemp* will retire March 4 as secretary to President (Calvin) Coolidge and be succeeded by Rep. Everett Sanders**."
Mr. Slemp, who has been with the President since he entered the White House, will join the law firm of Good, Chilas, Robb & Wescott of Chicago and Washington, D.C.
Representative Sanders (R-Indiana) did not run for re-election in 1924 and served as director of the RNC's speaker's bureau. He will turn 43 on March 8.
*Campbell Bascom Slemp (1870-1943) was born in Seminary, Virginia & was educated at the University of Virginia & Virginia Military Academy. He earned the highest GPA in the history of VMI. CBS served six terms as U.S. Congressman for Va's 9th District 1907-1923. He was secretary to CC 1923-1925.
**James Everett Sanders (1882-1950) was born in Coalmont, Indiana & attended Indiana State & Indiana Universities. JES practiced law in Terre Haute before serving in the US House of Representatives 1917-1925 & secretary to CC 1925-1929. He was RNC chairman 1932-1934.
