"HE HAS THE RIGHT TO DO AS HE PLEASES"

STORM BREWING OVER DRAPING OF AMERICAN FLAGS ON PRESIDENTIAL BOX

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On May 4, 1925, The Evening Star reports that "a stinging little storm" is brewing in regard to how American flags were hung on President Calvin Coolidge's box "at the opening game of the base ball season...several weeks ago."

Members in "patriotic society circles" believe the flags were not hung "according to association standards."  In fact, the Star says open charges were made today in New York by the United States Flag Association* of "a flagrant misuse of the flag" at Clark Griffith Stadium.

Specifically the charge is that instead of being hung properly, two American flags in the President's box were 'draped.'  According to Association guidelines, the American flag should 'hang' unfurled with the stars to the left of the observer.

Since the flags were draped for the opening of last year's baseball season, one "prominent member" of the USFA said...

"If the President...permits the flag to be misused, I shall not criticize him.  I suppose he has a right to do as he pleases."

*United States Flag Association is a union of patriotic societies of the U.S. which foster the honoring & preservation of the American flag.   USFA, a.k.a. American Flag Association, was founded in New York City in 1898,  Its motto, "One Flag, One County, God Over All."
