MICHIGAN MAN SENTENCED TO JAIL FOR BRINGING WHISKY TO CELEBRATE MARRIAGE
Washington, Pennsylvania (JFK+50) On May 5, 1925, Associated Press reports that one Joseph Emerick of Detroit, Michigan "must marry or serve a sentence of six months in jail for the illegal possession of liquor."
Mr. Emerick told the judge in court here in Washington, Pennsylvania* yesterday that he came to town to marry "the girl he left behind" bringing along with him some whisky with which to celebrate.
The judge imposed the jail sentence but informed Emerick that if he would bring his prospective bride and a marriage license into court before tomorrow morning, the sentence would be waived.
*Washington is part of the Pittsburgh, PA metropolitan area & is home to Washington & Jefferson College. It is the county seat of Washington County, the first to be named in honor of George Washington.
