PRESIDENT TRUMAN SIGNS U.N. CHARTER WITH LITTLE FANFARE
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On August 8, 1945, 80 years ago today, President Harry S Truman signed the United Nations* Charter along with Secretary of State James Byrnes. Mr. Truman signed with a ten-cent desk pen in a ceremony described as having "little fanfare."
The United States was the first nation to complete the U.N. ratification process and join the world peace-keeping organization.
The United Nations Charter would not take on "full force" until China, Russia, Great Britain, France and other nations completed the ratification process.
