GERALD NYE APPOINTED TO U.S. SENATE BY GOVERNOR SORLIE
Bismarck, North Dakota (JFK+50) On November 14, 1925, Gerald P. Nye*, publisher of the Griggs County Sentinel-Courier at Cooperstown, N.D. was appointed to fill the vacancy in the United States Senate caused by the death of E.F. Ladd.
Senator Nye was appointed, to the surprise of local political observers, by Governor A.G. Sorlie**.
*Gerald Prentice Nye (1892-1971) was born in Hortonville, Wisconsin & represented North Dakota in the U.S. Senate from 1925 to 1945. GPN became famous as chairman of the Special Committee on Investigation of the Munitions Industry (a.k.a. Nye Committee).
JFK+50 NOTE
The Nye Committee (1934-1936) investigated the profits & financial influence of arms manufacturers & bankers during WWI. Its findings strengthened support for isolationism in the years before the U.S. entered WWII.
**Arthur Gustave Sorlie (1874-1928) served as governor of North Dakota from 1925 to 1928. AGS was born in Albert Lea, Minnesota to parents from Norway. He was owner of a bread & cracker company located in Grand Forks before his governorship.
