"BIRDS DO NOT SEEK WELL LIT PLACES TO SLEEP"

STARLINGS IN PENNSYLVANIA AVE TREES CAN BE DRIVEN OUT WITH ELECTRIC LIGHTS, D.C. WOMAN PROPOSES

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On December 22, 1925, The Evening Star reports that a proposal goes before the District Commissioners today by Mary E. North who argues that the problem caused by starlings* roosting in the trees of Pennsylvania Avenue can be solved "by light instead of water."

Ms. North says...

"Birds do not seek well lighted places to sleep."

A string of electric lights strategically placed in the tops of the trees, she believes, will drive the birds out.

*starlings are small to medium perching birds known for their dark, glossy indescent sheen of plumage.
