"TO PREVENT LANDING OR STAGING A DEMONSTRATION"

SOVIET AMBASSADOR TO MEXICO PLACED UNDER GUARD IN HAVANA

Havana, Cuba (JFK+50) On December 5, 1926, The Sunday Star reports that "special guards were placed aboard the steamer Lafayette" when Soviet minister to Mexico, Mme. Alexandra Kollantay* arrived here in Havana yesterday.

The guards were deployed to prevent the ambassador from landing in Cuba or staging a demonstration.

She said that "it would be to the interest of both countries if the U.S. and Russia entered into official relations."

JFK+50 NOTE

Sixteen years of non-recognition of the Soviet Union ended on Nov 16, 1933 when the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt officially recognized the USSR and opened diplomatic relations.

*Alexandra Kollontai (1872-1952) was born in St. Petersburg, Russia & became the 1st woman to be a cabinet minister.  She was highly prominent in the Bolshevik party.
