PRESIDENT APPEALS TO STATES TO MAINTAIN INDIVIDUAL SOVEREIGNTY
Williamsburg, Virginia (JFK+50) On May 15, 1926, President Calvin Coolidge, speaking here in the historic city of Williamsburg*, appealed to the States "to maintain their individual sovereignty and not surrender the management of their affairs to the Federal Government."
The President's address was in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Virginia convention.
President Coolidge said...
"We must keep all (our country's) different parts in harmony by refusing to adopt legislation which is not for the general welfare."
JFK+50 NOTE
Colonial Williamsburg holds a special place in my memory. We took many field trips in the 1970s for my 8th grade history students at Doyle Middle School. We also took our daughter for many memorable vacations there.
*Williamsburg was founded as Middle Plantation by English settlers in 1632 & served as the capital of Colonial Virginia 1699-1780. It is home of the College of William & Mary which was attended by 3 U.S. presidents. With the financial aid of John D. Rockefeller the city & historic area was restored beginning in 1926 & continuing into the 1930s.
