STRANGER WALKS INTO TREASURY 'TO SEE HOW YOU TREAT YOUR PRISONERS'
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On July 21, 1926, The Evening Star reports that a "tall athletic stranger" walked into the Treasury Building* here in the Nation's Capital not seeking a marriage license or dog tags as some have done before.
When confronted by a Treasury Guard dressed in blue and gold, the stranger said...
"I understand that this is the District penitentiary, and I should like to look into some of the cells to see how you treat your prisoners."
When the guard informed the stranger that he was in the United States Treasury, the stranger replied...
"Not interested," and just "walked out into the heat!"
*U.S. Treasury Building, located at 1500 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, D.C., was built between 1836 & 1869. It is of Neoclassical design. USTB is the headquarters of the Department of Treasury.
