FRIENDS TALKING ABOUT ANOTHER TERM FOR MR. COOLIDGE
White Pine Camp, New York (JFK+50) On July 30, 1926, J. Russell Young of the Evening Star reports that Representative Bertrand H. Snell*, chairman of the House Rules Committee, says friends of President Calvin Coolidge are "helping him none by booming him...for another term."
Mr. Snell believes the President would be "greatly embarrassed" by such talk "at this early date."
JFK+50 NOTE
Rep. Snell supported Herbert Hoover in 1928 but would have preferred President Coolidge to run for another term. He worked in opposition to FDR's New Deal programs.
Coolidge assumed the Presidency on the death of Harding in 1923 & won election for his own full term in 1924. One of his most well known quotes is "I do not choose to run in 1928!"
*Bertrand Hollis Snell (1870-1958) was born in Colton, New York & served in the U.S. Congress (R-New York) 1915-1939. BHS was minority leader 1931-1939 & opposed federal regulations & big spending.
