"FARMER WOULD BECOME GOVERNMENT SERVANT"

NIXON SAYS DEMS ASKING FARMERS TO SELL BIRTHRIGHT 'FOR A MESS OF POTTAGE'

La Crosse, Wisconsin (JFK+50) On October 9, 1960, Vice-President Richard Nixon addressed a "capacity crowd" at the auditorium here in La Crosse* saying that Senator John F. Kennedy's proposed farm program would cause liberty to disappear and...

"the farmer would be made into a Government servant."

The Vice-President added that the Democrats are asking farmers to sell their birthright "for a mess of pottage."

JFK+50 NOTE

The evening before Kennedy and Nixon had faced off in the second of four presidential debates.  The Sunday Star reports that while the candidates thought they did a great job, the voters "weren't budged."

The Star says Nixon's airport crowd later on Oct 9th was smaller and "less enthusiastic" than expected.

*La Crosse is the most populous city on the western border of Wisconsin.  LC borders the Mississippi River & today is a regional educational, medical, manufacturing & transportation hub.
