"ON TOP OF OLD SMOKY"

GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK ESTABLISHED

Knoxville, Tennessee (JFK+50) On June 15, 1934, the Great Smoky Mountain National Park* was established requiring more than 1200 land owners to vacate their properties.

Knoxville pharmacist Colonel David Chapman* played a leading role in making the National Park a reality.  The main highway leading from Knoxville to the Park was named in his honor.

*The Great Smoky Mountain National Park, 522,419 acres, is located in Eastern Tennessee & Western North Carolina.  It includes some of the highest points in the U.S. including Clingman's Dome & Mount Le Conte.  The park was dedicated by FDR in 1940 & is the most visited National Park in the country.

**David Carpenter Chapman (1876-1944) was born in Knoxville, Tennessee & attended the University of Tennessee.  DCC served in the Spanish American War & WWI.
