"I BELIEVE THIS CONDITION TO BE UNPRECEDENTED"

3000 ALIENS FACE DEPORTATION, 10,000 MORE AWAIT EXAMINATION AT ELLIS

New York City (JFK+50) On November 4, 1923, The Sunday Star reports "more than 3000 would-be immigrants," including 1367 who arrived aboard the Leviathan yesterday, "face deportation."

The announcement was made by Commissioner of Immigration Henry H. Curran* who said quotas of eleven countries had been exhausted.

More than 10,000 immigrants are awaiting examination at Ellis Island** aboard ships in New York harbor.

Commissioner Curran said...

"I believe this condition to be unprecedented."

*Henry Hastings Curran (1877-1966) was born in New York City & graduated Yale University 1898 & New York School of Law 1900. HHC was a reporter & editor for the NY Tribune before serving as Commissioner of Immigration.

**Ellis Island, located within the states of New Jersey & New York, was the busiest immigration inspection & processing station the U.S.
