"SHOT FIRED OUTSIDE ELYSEE PALACE MISSES TARGET"

FRENCH PRESIDENT SAFE AT TIME OF 'ASSASSINATION' ATTEMPT

Paris, France (JFK+50) On September 8, 1922, a shot was fired but missed an automobile "in front of the palace of the Elysee*" here in Paris.

The  shooter, 19 year old George Salem, an Egyptian student, thought that French President Alexandre Millerand** was inside the vehicle.

As the would-be assassin fired his pistol, he was seized by a security guard.  The quick response by the guard caused Salem to collapse.

The Star reports that President Millerand was safely in residence at his country estate in Rambouillet*** at the time of the incident.

ADMIRAL FELT PREDICTED INSTABILITY IN VIETNAM WOULD CONTINUE THROUGH 1965

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) 51 years ago today, May 31, 1963, Admiral Harry Donald Felt's, report on Vietnam was evaluated by the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Admiral Felt was Commander-in -chief of United States Pacific Forces.

In the report, Felt was skeptical that Vietnam would be stable enough by the end of the year 1965 for a proposed withdrawal of United States forces.

Admiral Felt created the United States Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV) in February 1962.

Felt was personally opposed to the introduction of American combat forces in Vietnam.
