"WOULD DRIVE FASCISM FROM FACE OF THE EARTH"

AFL PRESIDENT HAS NO LOVE FOR FASCISM

New York City (JFK+50) On September 6, 1926, The Evening Star reports that last evening William Green*, president of the American Federation of Labor, said he would "drive Fascism from the face of the earth."

Mr. Green, speaking at Carnegie Hall here in New York to the Anti-Fascist Alliance of North America, added...

"I am deeply in sympathy with the anti-Fascist movement.  The AFL stands for freedom and democracy...and it will be heard wherever there is a movement to substitute autocracy for democracy."

*William Green (1873-1952) was born in Coshocton, Ohio & was a member of the Ohio Senate 1911-1915, Secretary-Treasurer of the United Mine Workers 1913-1924 & president of AFL 1924-1952.  WG was a supporter of cooperation between labor & management.

"GRAND COUNCIL MAKES AUGUSTO TURATI GEN SECRETARY"

IDEAL FASCIST STATE ENVISIONED BY MUSSOLINI A STEP CLOSER

Rome, Italy (JFK+50) On March 31, 1926, Associated Press reports that the Grand Council of the Fascist Party here in Italy took a step this morning toward "realization of Premier (Benito) Mussolini's dream of the perfect fascist state."

The Council provided for the direct labor union representation in the Senate and appointed Augusto Turati*, organizer of labor unions, to the position of General Secretary."

*Augusto Turati (1888-1955) was born in Parma, Italy & served on the Front in WWI.  AT joined the National Fascist Party & was active in trade unionism.  He served as General Secretary 1926-1930.

MUSSOLINI, FOUNDER OF FASCISM, WRITES HISTORY OF MOVEMENT

Rome, Italy (JFK+50) On July 29, 1925, Associated Press reports that Italian dictator Benito Mussolini* "is now undertaking the task of incorporating his achievements by becoming the interpreter and historian" of Fascism**.

Mussolini's writings appear in the political monthly 'Gerarchia.'  AP describes the articles as "militant and controversial in tone."

*Benito Mussolini (1883-1945) was born in Predappio, Italy & was Prime Minister/dictator of Italy 1922-1945.  BM founded the Nationalist Fascist Party and inspired the international spread of fascism.

**fascism is a far right authoritarian and ultra-national political ideology characterized by extreme nationality, dictatorial power & suppression of opposition as well as a strong regimented society & economy.
